FAQ

What do all the letters after your name mean?

I am an Ph.D., LCSW, CMHIMP, CCAPT, and CDBT. That can absolutely look like a mouthful!

Ph.D. – this means I am a Doctor of Philosophy. This is an academic or professional degree that, in most countries, qualifies the degree holder to teach their chosen subject at university level or to work in a specialized position in their chosen field.

LCSW – this means that I am a mental health clinician with a Master of Social Work degree who works independently.

CMHIMP – this means that I am a certified Certified Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider.

CDBT – this means that I am certified DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) therapist. The “certified” part acknowledges my graduate-level specialization and training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

CCAPT – this means that I am a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional.

CTMH – this means that I am a certified Clinical Telemental Health Provider.

How do I pay for therapy?

I am a private-pay clinician, meaning that I do not bill insurance. I take credit and debit cards, as well as HSA and FSA cards.

Please see the Payment Information page for more detailed payment information.

Why don’t you take insurance?

Being an ethical therapist means providing you with the care you deserve, and insurance often gets in the way of providing you that care. To be in-network with insurance providers, I would be required to provide you a diagnosis and report certain treatment information. I feel that these disclosures, while legal, violate your right to privacy. And while diagnoses can be helpful, diagnosis can carry stigma, and I believe we can work through what you’re experiencing largely without potentially harmful labels. Some insurance providers also set limits on which diagnoses they will cover and for how long they will cover your sessions. If you would like more information about why I am not an in-network provider, read this article.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Please reach out to me to schedule a consultation so that we can determine whether we will be a good therapeutic fit. The consultation is a phone  or video call and will last between 20- or 50 minutes. If we both feel like we’d like to proceed with an appointment, I will make it with you during the consultation, or we can follow up via email.

Go to the Book Now page to set up your consultation!

I think I’m ready to get started! What can I expect?

Great! I’m looking forward to working together. Here’s a brief overview of next steps.

1. You schedule and complete a phone or video consultation. It will last 20 or 50 minutes and is helpful in determining whether we are a good therapeutic and/or life coaching fit. Go to the Book Now page to set up your consultation!

2. Then you schedule and attend your sessions.

You can expect to feel challenged. I am an active therapist, which means that I may redirect, shift focus, and ask you to be willing to experiment with me in our sessions together as it becomes appropriate.

You may find yourself feeling deep, complex emotions that you don’t often experience. You may find that you have fun, too!
